Raid boss speech: some favoritesPosted: June 28, 2013
While healing Vault of Mysteries on my druid the other day, I was reminded again how much I love the voice of the Ancient Mogu Machine during the Will of the Emperor encounter. Amidst the chaotic sounds of battle – various heals, swords crashing, spells being cast, arrows flying, and so on – the machine announces every key arrival with a voice that seems older than time itself:
Summoning Jan-Xi and Qin-Xi:
The Endless Army will crush the Emperor’s foes.
Summoning Emperor’s Rage / Strength / Courage:
The Emperor’s Rage echoes through the hills.
The Emperor’s Strength grips this land with fists of iron.
The Emperor’s Courage burns everlasting.
Titan Gas starts/ends:
The Emperor’s Breath abates.
The Emperor’s Breath is regained.
The Emperor’s Will dominates all it beholds.
And if you’re interested, here’s the audio mined during beta. Awesome… although to my ears, there’s nothing like hearing it during the fight.
My favorite during the fight was always “The Emperor’s Courage burns everlasting.” However, listening to this isolated audio, “The Emperor’s Strength grips this land with fists of iron.” is otherworldly! That’s just my opinion, though. At any rate, I do remember seeing the encounter for the first time, even in LFR, and getting chills whenever that voice came rumbling from the depths of forever ago.
This is not necessarily my favorite, because I suck at picking favorites, but it is certainly one of them. Here are just a few other examples of raid speech that I will likely never forget (in no particular order):
1. Anub’arak, Trial of the Crusader (quote at 1:06 of the video)
“Rise, minions! Devour!”
I always loved hearing that one. So awesome!
2. Bolvar Fordragon, Fall of the Lich King cinematic (sequence starts at 3:21 of the video)
“Tell them only that the Lich King is dead, and that Bolvar Fordragon died with him.
“Now go! Leave this place! And never return.”
This wasn’t technically during the fight, but when it ended, and Bolvar became the new Lich King, and his eyes lit up and his voice started to change? Yeah, major chills.
3. Majordomo Fandral Staghelm, Firelands (2:10 in the video)
“You stood in the fire!”
The processing on Staghelm’s voice is somewhat harsh to listen to when isolated like this, like Anub’arak, but what a great moment of levity to hear that the first time someone died during a first-ever pull of this boss (and thereafter)!
Like I said, these are just a few standout raid boss memories for me, nothing comprehensive. And of course there are the ones that I wanted to forget for such a long time: Sindragosa comes to mind…
What are your favorite moments of raid boss speech in WoW? I’d love to know!
